AAaarrgghh! Why does the chain keep falling off my chainsaw?

It’s one of those chainsaw-on-a-stick deals. I don’t have the manual- I bought it used. I pull the chain as tight as I can around the saw and tighten the bolts. If I’m really lucky, I get through a half-dollar size branch before the chain falls off again. Please help!

there should be probably two bolts that hold the bar onto the saw. put your chain around the bar and around the drive sprocket. finger tighten the two, maybe three, bolts that hold the bar on. now, probably on the other side of the bar on the chainsaw body itself—probably sitting right in the middle of the bar is a chain adjustment screw. with the main bolts just finger tight, turn this adjusting screw to the right–clockwise—to tighten up your chain. what this screw does is pull the bar out away from the drive sprocket.

don’t overdo it—keep an eye on the chain as you turn the screw to the right. there should be enough slack in the chain so that you can grab it about midway on the bottom of the bar and pull it down about a quarter to a half inch. once you get the screw set where the chain is reasonably tight, finish tightening up the bolts that hold the bar onto the saw.

it kinda sounds like you are missing the chain tightener or it isn’t hooked up right. take a look at your chainsaw and make sure the chain tension screw is there and working. if your chain tensioning screw is missing the chain will work loose rather quickly and fall off the bar.

also make sure your oil reservoir is full so that you can keep the chain oiled.

what you may want to do is google the manufacturer of the saw and see if you can download a manual—a lot of places have manuals in Adobe pdf files that you can download for free.
