A lumberman is working in a valley. He has the option of dragging his lumber (logs) up a
path with a 30 degree incline to his truck which is high above, or he can haul the logs vertically
upward with a winch to the same place. His logs each have a mass of no more than 200 kg, and
he estimates the coefficient of kinetic friction between the logs and the path is μk = 0.9. In both
cases, he will pull the logs with a rope and he will keep the velocity of the log nearly constant
during its motion. Also when he pulls the logs up the path, he is sure to keep the rope parallel
to the path. Which method will require the least amount of force, thus minimizing the tension
in the rope

To pull them up using the winch the tension would be the weight of the logs (m*g)

To pull them up the ramp T = m*g*sin(30) + µ*m*g*cos(30)

So if sin(30) + µ*cos(30) is > 1 then he should use the winch

So .5 + .9*.866 = 1.28

So use the winch
