How to convert shower handle fixtures from 3 to 1?

The house I just purchased currently has an older shower, not sure of age, but it has 3 fixture handles in the shower – one for hot, cold and to switch between bath and shower water. We would like to change it to have only one handle that controls everything but I would love to be able to do it myself.

I am wondering how tough this job would be for someone with limited plumbing knowledge? Also, we currently have fiberglass shower walls that we are planning on replacing at the same time so access to the pipes is not a problem – there is also access behind the shower from a closet.

You did say “limited plumbing knowledge”, didn’t you? Hire a plumber to do this part. Compare faucet assemblies like yolurs with single handle fixtures in a home improvement store and you will see that the supply lines (hot and cold water lines) will have to be altered to fit the configuration and connections of your new faucet. It also matters whether you have CPVC, copper, or galvanized supply lines. To save money, you can all of the tearout, puchase the new faucet, have the plumber only install the faucet, and do the rest yourself.
